Description

A wife and mother of two waits anxiously in anticipation of the arrival of her husband home from war. After months away in wartorn Afghanistan, she'll be happy just to have him back in her arms. But once he's returned and when the parades and celebrations are over, life goes back to daily routine. She begins to notice that something isn't right. The man who left for deployment six months ago has changed. He is cranky and easy to anger. He tosses and turns at night and avoids interaction with the children. He starts drinking more and working less. This picture is all too familiar for spouses of those suffering from the mental illness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Six per cent of all Canadian Forces military members will experience PTSD at some point in their careers, according to the CF. This year, the CF, along with the departments of National Defence and Veterans Affairs, have started shining more light onto the issues surrounding PTSD, or what the military calls operational stress injury, in the hopes of fighting its stigma and helping more soldiers recover. Along with help for soldiers and veterans, more services are being provided for the families who are also affected.
